Buying it because it lists a high milligram count on the label is not the same as actually getting that magnesium into circulation.
For blood pressure specifically, research points to a daily intake somewhere between 300 and 400 milligrams of elemental magnesium as a meaningful target. The word “elemental” matters here – supplement labels often list the weight of the entire compound, not just the magnesium portion, so a tablet labeled 500mg of magnesium glycinate contains considerably less actual magnesium than that number implies. Reading the “elemental magnesium” line on a supplement facts panel gives you the real figure.
Timing is less rigid than dosage. Many people take magnesium in the evening because it can support relaxation and sleep, which themselves have measurable effects on blood pressure. Taking it with food reduces the chance of stomach discomfort, particularly with citrate forms. Splitting a daily dose into two smaller ones – morning and evening – is a common approach that maintains more consistent blood levels throughout the day.
Getting Magnesium Through Food
Supplementation is not the only path. Dark leafy greens, particularly spinach, are among the highest dietary sources of magnesium. Pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, avocado, and dark chocolate all contribute meaningfully. Whole grains that haven’t been heavily processed retain magnesium that refined versions lose.
The challenge is consistency. Magnesium supplements interact with certain medications. People taking antibiotics in the tetracycline or fluoroquinolone classes, or bisphosphonates used for bone density, should be aware that magnesium can reduce how well those drugs are absorbed if taken at the same time. A two-hour gap between magnesium and those medications is a standard workaround. Diuretics – which are themselves sometimes prescribed for high blood pressure – can either increase or decrease magnesium levels depending on the type, which is a reason to mention supplementation to a prescribing doctor rather than treating it as categorically harmless because it came from a vitamin aisle.
People with kidney disease face a more specific concern: impaired kidneys can’t clear excess magnesium efficiently, which creates a risk of accumulation. For everyone else in reasonable health, the upper tolerable intake level sits at 350 milligrams per day from supplements specifically – dietary magnesium from food isn’t subject to the same ceiling because the body regulates absorption from food more effectively than from concentrated supplements.
A standard blood panel does not reliably detect magnesium deficiency. Serum magnesium tests measure what’s circulating in the blood, but most of the body’s magnesium is stored in bone and tissue. Blood levels can appear normal while cellular stores are low. If you’re tracking the effect of supplementation on blood pressure, monitoring your actual blood pressure readings over several weeks gives you more actionable information than waiting for a lab number to shift.
